‘Awful’ apartments plan is rejected

A ‘GHASTLY’ and ‘awful’ proposal to build a block of apartments as part of the Malvern Vale development has been unanimously rejected by councillors.

Plans for Phase 6 at the Leigh Sinton Road site came before Malvern Hills District Council’s Southern Area Development Management Committee but members slated the application due to its size and appearance.

The building, which would have been a mixture of three and four storeys, was set to include 21 apartments but ward member Coun Graham Myatt said it would not fit in with the current work taking place.

He said: “Before I went on the site visit I was strongly minded to accept this application. However having been to the site and seeing the size I have mixed feelings on the proposal.

“I certainly recognise the affordable housing need and have no problems there but I do have a real problem in the size of the proposed development. It is totally disproportionate.”

Despite being recommended for approval, the plans failed to receive any backing from the committee, who unanimously voted for refusal, with Coun Michael Soley saying he would feel sorry for any future resident of the building.

Coun John Raine added: “I am shocked this is a four-storey proposal. “The real character of Malvern Vale would be changed by these plans to build a block of apartments.”

Coun Clive Smith said: “No wonder it is affordable housing, because no one in their right mind would be purchasing one.”
