Construction of Southern Link Road phase four to be considered later this month

Malvern Editorial 18th Mar, 2018   0

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council’s planning and regulatory committee will be considering an application for the proposed construction of the fourth phase of the Southern Link Road later this month.

The application includes the dualling of A4440 between Ketch and Powick roundabouts with improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, a new road bridge and viaduct to be built alongside current structures and a new footbridge over Hams Way.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member with responsibility for economy and infrastructure, said: “The SLR is an essential part of Worcestershire’s strategic road network and provides an important link between the M5, South and West Worcester, Great Malvern, the wider Malvern Hills district, Ledbury, Upton and Herefordshire.

“The intention of the full SLR scheme is to dual the entire length from the M5 to the Powick roundabout.

“Subject to the outcome of the planning application, when complete, it is expected that the journey times along the SLR will be reduced, city centre congestion will be relieved and the road will be able to support the delivery of the South Worcestershire Urban Extension.”

The proposal for the fourth phase of the scheme is to dual the existing 1.9km single carriageway between Ketch and Powick roundabouts, improve both of these roundabouts, construct a cycle/footbridge over Hams Way and build an additional bridge and viaduct to sit next to the current Carrington Bridge and Powick Common Viaduct.

Subject to planning permission and the successful completion of other statutory procedures, Worcestershire County Council anticipates the main construction work to commence in Spring 2019.

The committee meeting will be held at 10am next Tuesday in the council chamber at County Hall and will also be streamed live via webcast.
