THE FAMILY of much-loved Worcestershire paramedic Christine Gill said they had been overwhelmed with the generosity and support after an appeal to raise £20,000 for live-saving cancer treatment was raised in less than three weeks.
We reported on Christine’s plight back in April and now, thanks to generous donors coming forward, her treatment can now go ahead.
With the fund-raising page exceeding the target amount, any extra cash collected will pay for any additional support she needs, including medication and counselling sessions.
Christine, based at West Midlands Ambulance Service’s Worcester hub, has had a successful 34-year career in the NHS during which time she has saved hundreds of lives.
She is currently undergoing her second round of chemotherapy through the NHS and the family are in talks with a private clinic that focuses directly on proton beam radiotherapy treatment. The technique is better-equipped to target harder to reach tumours in sensitive locations or near vital organs in the body and ensures the best possible outcomes with minimal side effects.
Daughter Bethany said: “Words can’t describe how grateful myself and my family are – we are truly amazed at the love and the comments we’ve received on the JustGiving page.”
“How we have raised £23,000 I don’t know but that figure is truly amazing and will help my mum, although we’ve reached the goal, the page will stay up for those who would like to donate.”
Bethany is getting married in September and Christine wants to walk her down the aisle.
“This treatment means that she is one step closer to this.”
A ‘Christine’s fight with GI Oesaphageal Cancer Facebook Page has been set up by Christine and her family to provide updates on her battle with cancer and to promote awareness of her condition. As well as the best way to send messages of support directly to her and her family.
A live head shave is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 17, on the page.
