Football fans urged to support return of Hereford FC

FOOTBALL fans in Malvern are being urged to help celebrate the return of Hereford FC when the town holds the re-formed club’s first ever match.

Malvern Town will go up against Hereford in what organisers expect to be an ‘emotional match’ at the HDanywhere Community Stadium on Tuesday (July 7).

In December last year, Hereford United were wound up by the High Court after bosses at the 90-year-old club failed to prove they could pay off its debts.

Following this, a group of businessmen came on board to help the Hereford United Supporters Trust (HUST) create a new club, which will play in Midland Football League Premier next season.

Chris Pinder, chairman of Malvern Town FC, which was on the brink of closure in 2013, said it was a ‘privilege’ to be selected to host Hereford FC’s opening pre-season game.

And he described the upcoming match at the Pickersleigh-based ground as ‘the biggest football event for the area in 20 years’.

“We went through a similar situation when we saved Malvern Town a few years ago and it goes to show that clubs are only as good as the people running them,” Mr Pinder said.

“It is fantastic that Malvern and Hereford now have been able to bring themselves up like a ‘Phoenix From The Flames’ and hold this inaugural friendly.”

More than 2,000 tickets have been sold for Hereford’s match against FC United at Edgar Street next Saturday (July 11) and Mr Pinder said he hoped hundreds of people would also snap up tickets for the game at Malvern.

“For the people of Malvern it will show just how far we have come and for Hereford fans it will be quite an emotional match and I am sure they will be excited to see this Phoenix club in action,” Pinder added.

Tickets for the encounter, which kicks off at 7.45pm, will cost £6, but people can save £1 if they book online by visiting Malvern Town FC’s website.
