Gathered together to mark anniversary of Worcestershire Record Office

FORMER colleagues, volunteers and members of the Friends of Worcestershire Archives were on hand to celebrate 75 years since the creation of Worcestershire Record Office.

Chairman of Worcestershire County Council, Coun Steve MacKay and the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire’s Deputy Lieutenant, Sir Nicholas Lechmere (Bt) all attended the special Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service event.

A number of special documents were brought out for a display to mark the occasion, including some which were included in the first ever WRO display back in November 1947.

The archive service launched in 1947 as a records collection for the documents used by the county council, but also contained more specialist collections and it later expanded to include Diocesan records.

Since then more than 12 miles of shelves of documents have been deposited, and around 30,000 people a year use the archives and Self-Service resources in The Hive.

Adrian Gregson, county archivist at Worcestershire County Council said, “It was wonderful to be able to celebrate our fantastic service with the people who have supported it, past and present, as well as welcome the Chairman of the county council and Deputy Lieutenant.

“We are very proud of the work that has been done to preserve historically important documents and items in Worcestershire over the last 75 years and it has been wonderful to celebrate this milestone with the people who have been dedicated to preserving those collections for future generations.”

The Archives service is working to expand their current collections to include documents and items from more diverse communities, as well as focusing on archiving digital records so that future generations can access them.
