Great Malvern Primary School looking for votes to win funding to improve safety of playground

Malvern Editorial 16th Nov, 2017   0

GREAT Malvern Primary School is urgently seeking votes to secure a grant from the Aviva Community Fund in a bid to make their playground much safer for its children.

In a questionnaire, pupils at the Lydes Road school complained injuries sustained on the playing areas were down to the uneven surfaces.

On average, it was revealed that three students every day were coming into class with cuts and scratches after falling over in the playground.

A project has now been created following the survey and it is expected to cost about £70,000.

The school has divided the scheme into five stages so the playground is not completely off limits to pupils and so work can be carried out at ‘cheaper’ times of the year.

Work is expected to last between 12 to 18 months.

So far the children have already raised close to £3,000 towards the cost of the project through sponsored skipping, raffles, non-uniform days and cake sales.

And the school have stressed they will match any funding given to them by outside grants.

A spokesperson for Great Malvern Primary School said: “Our playground facilities are in poor condition and non-existent.

“This project will bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities increasing the social spaces in the school grounds.

“It will also enable children to socialise and play together.

“Not everyone learns well in a classroom so an inspirational outdoor space will promote cognitive development.”

The spokesperson added that for the children’s health and well-being, it was important that they ‘need to be active and creative’ in a safe environment.
