Help break a world record with Tenbury’s Christmas kiss-a-thon

Malvern Editorial 23rd Nov, 2018 Updated: 26th Nov, 2018   0

THE TENBURY Mistletoe Association needs help to break the world record for the most kisses under the mistletoe.

Currently, the record is 224 smooches but organisers of this year’s Tenbury Mistletoe Festival are hopeful they can beat that as part of a specially arranged Kiss-a-thon.

Those attending the festival on Saturday, December 1 will be encouraged to sign up for the record attempt.

Anyone aged 16 and over can register to take part on the day and those who have their kiss officially logged will be entered into a free prize draw.

Friends, partners, couples and couples-to-be are all welcome to join in.

The kiss-a-thon takes place at 4.30pm before Santa is paraded through the streets of Tenbury to his grotto in St Mary’s Church.

A small donation is asked to see Santa and every child will receive a present.

The day itself starts at 10am, with plenty to see and do from market stalls to Morris Dancers, dancers, storytelling, willow craft making, Men in Harmony GR-V111, Sunshine Radio, live music and more.

A special Christmas workshop will be taking place in Tenbury Library with author, illustrator and writing judge Helen Wendy Cooper at 11am.

It includes a reading of The Kissing Tree (Tenbury’s own children’s book, sponsored by Tenbury Mistletoe Association and written by Helen), poems, a book signing and creative crafts.

There will also be the crowning of the Mistletoe Queen, Holly Prince, Mistletoe Maidens and Holly Henchmen, Frigg and the mischievous Loki.

At 2pm, The Mistletoe Ceremony takes place on the Burgage honouring the male and female plants and the harvests of the Teme Valley.

Tenbury Wells has had a long association with the sale of Holly and Mistletoe dating back more than 100 years.

Tenbury is the only town in the Hereford and Worcester area to continue the tradition of selling the plant, with markets on the last Tuesday of November and first two Tuesdays in December.

Diann Dowell, chairwoman of Tenbury Mistletoe Association, said: “I was brave enough to create a space to make history. Will you be brave enough to take that step and log that kiss?”
