Historic Malvern buildings and landscapes to get extra protection

Malvern Editorial 23rd Feb, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

HISTORIC buildings and landscapes throughout Malvern look set to receive extra protection after a new scheme was implemented by the district council.

The Local List Supplementary Planning Document will add to the English Heritage list and will highlight areas which contribute to the district’s character.

No extra statutory protection will be given but the new scheme will be taken into consideration when planning matters in the area come to the committee.

Malvern Civic Society has ‘strongly welcomed’ the decision and chairman Clive Hooper said: “The Civic Society looks forward to working closely with Malvern Hills District Council on the compilation of this list.

“Malvern Civic Society has long had a commitment to securing such a list and in fact this should be greatly helped by the project work it has been doing in the last year in the Malvern area.

“Quite a few of the buildings whose details appear on the Historic Environment Record are also likely to be included on the Local List, so this work will provide invaluable descriptive information on each building or asset.”

The decision was agreed at a district council planning committee meeting and Coun Melanie Baker, portfolio holder for planning and housing, said the list would provide an ‘essential role’ in building a sense of community in the area.

“There are still many buildings, structures and landscapes that the community holds dear and which make a valuable contribution to a local sense of history and quality of life,” she added.

“I am always proud to show visitors the historic buildings, gas lamps and post boxes and I am sure the civic pride I feel runs through the veins of many other Malvern residents.”

The council will now set up a panel to decide what should be included in the list.
