Homes plan edges closer despite severe objections

AN ‘EYESORE’ development moved a step closer to being built in Welland despite councillors being unhappy with the design of the proposals.

A total of 30 homes on land between the Old Post Office and Church Farm Drive on Drake Street have already received outline planning permission.

But Malvern Hills District Council’s Southern Area Development Management Committee refused to give the go-ahead for a detailed application submitted for the same site.

Concerns were raised over the height of the proposed buildings, the lack of green space and parking at the estate.

Coun Mick Davies, councillor for Morton, said: “There will be an impact of this development on the character of the village.

“Parking could spill on to Drake Street and that would be a dreadful place to park.”

Coun Jill Campbell, councillor for Malvern Wells, added: “I didn’t like this site when it came before and I like it even less now, having seen the design layout.

“I am certainly not happy with the height of the proposed dwellings.

“I thought it was a real eyesore and I think the access is going to cause all sorts of problems.”

Despite the fears, the head of planning and housing was delegated approval subject to further discussions between the applicant and ward member and receipt of the amended plans.
