Leisure firm takes on running of four centres

A LEADING leisure provider has officially taken over four centres in the Malvern Hills District.

Freedom Leisure now heads the management of Malvern Splash, Sport Dyson Perrins and Sport Martley and will operate the sites on behalf of Malvern Hills District Council.

All three centres will benefit from upgrade work with a total of £900,000 and the formal takeover took place at Malvern Splash last Wednesday (April 1).

The Priory Road site will have its gym completely refurbished including new flooring, painting, new lights, mirrors and windows while there will also be free swimming for children under eight and adults over 75.

Existing memberships for all sites ended on April 1 so those wanting to use the centres, under Freedom Leisure, need to sign up.

And there is currently a ‘free April’ for those signing up at one or more of the sites – those joining before next Wednesday (April 15) will get their membership fee waived.

Those wanting too join can visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk or pop into one of the centres.

Matt Hunt, Freedom Leisure operations director, said: “We are delighted to be in place now here at Malvern Splash Leisure Complex, the Sport Dyson Perrins Leisure Centre and Sport Martley Leisure Centre and are looking forward to working in close partnership with Malvern Hills District Council to deliver excellent leisure facilities to the local community.

“I would like to thank the staff and members at all three sites for helping us achieve a smooth handover and I am looking forward to welcoming new and returning members in the coming days and weeks.”

The company also took over Tenbury Swimming Pool, in partnership with Tenbury Community Pool Ltd, on February 1 and will provide a £360,000 cash boost to improve the site and its services.

Ivor Pumfrey, head of community services at MHDC, added: “We are very pleased to welcome Freedom Leisure to the Malvern Hills district as the council’s new leisure operator and are delighted to see a smooth transition has taken place across the facilities today.

“It marks the start of what promises to be an exciting 15-year relationship, which will see a substantial investment into facility improvements, a rise in standards and customer service and a wide range of new community based activities.

“We are confident that together, these measures will lead to a significant increase in the number of people leading healthy and active lifestyles across the district.”
