Malvern MP welcomes news of £54.5million Government investment into Carrington Bridge

Malvern Editorial 25th Oct, 2017   0

MALVERN’S MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed the huge win for county commuters after the Department for Transport confirmed funding for the Carrington Road bridge doubling project.

The major route improvements will see an extra span added to the crossing over the River Severn completing a series of improvements along the A4440 improving journey times for commuters.

Harriett first pressed for the improvement project with Downing Street following serious flooding in 2014 which saw the New Road closed in Worcester and Upton-upon-Severn’s major roads swamped.

Capacity issues along the A4440 have caused misery for commuters for years and the much-needed improvements form a central part of the growth plan for county businesses including many based in and around Malvern.

Work on the £70million project is expected to be completed by 2021.

“I feel immense joy that the years of lobbying have finally paid off and the case has been made to double the Carrington Road bridge.

“The road has been over-capacity for many years and it has been a regular issue both in my postbag but also with the businesses who raise it whenever I meet with them.

“Everyone is grateful for the work Worcestershire County Council has put into this bid and managing the extensive improvements along the busy Southern Link Road.

“I know that this news will be warmly welcomed by local people and none of us can wait for the work to get started and deliver an important piece of infrastructure improvements for West Worcestershire.”
