MAYOR'S DIARY: Coun Julian I'Anson writes for The Observer

EVERY year has anniversaries.

This year there has been, amongst others, VE Day, and still to come is the 150th anniversary of Malvern College.

Interestingly, one of the early proposers of the college, which was opened in 1865, was John Lea, a partner of Lea and Perrins of sauce fame.

The architect of the original Gothic style building was Charles Hanson whose brother invented the famous cab.

Over the coming decades the college moved steadily forward.

The First World War cut swathes through fine young old boys. During the Second World War more were lost.

The college buildings were requisitioned and the boys spent time at Harrow and Blenheim Palace.

Girls were admitted in the 1990s and now form an equal part with the boys.

Moving rapidly forward to the present, two new boarding houses have been built, showing great confidence in the future, and a splendid sports centre which the people of Malvern may use.

Old boys include the famous Foster sporting family, the dedicated Christian C.S.Lewis, Speaker of the House of Commons, Lord Weatherill, a past mayor of Malvern Roger Hall-Jones and of course Jeremy Paxman.

With Lord MacLaurin, an old boy and very active chairman of the College Council and Antony Clark as headmaster of Malvern College it shows no sign of resting on its laurels.

Happy Anniversary.
