Memorial will be protected for life

AN HISTORIC memorial in Alfrick has received lifetime protection after it was listed by English Heritage.

The Alfrick War Memorial, on Clay Green, was given Grade 2 status by the national body after recommendations were put in place by Alfrick and Lulsley Parish Council in February.

Having been at the site since 1920, the landmark contains about 96 names and was officially listed on March 6.

Listed building consent from English Heritage will now be required for any work to take place on the memorial or on the land where it is based.

Geoffrey Brewin, parish council town clerk, said: “The council said they were unanimous our war memorial is a fine example of Worcestershire’s rural vernacular design and well worth listing as an item that should be preserved for posterity.

“Repairs and so forth do take place on listed buildings but it does mean it is protected, listed and of architectural interest.

“The parish is delighted it has been recognised as having subsequent merit to be listed at Grade 2.”

The memorial was one of tens of thousands put in place across England as part of the biggest single wave of public commemoration in the aftermath of the First World War.

A stone plaque remembering the fallen from the Second World War was added after 1945.

English Heritage said the structure had been listed as it is of historic interest as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on the community and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts.

It added as the memorial was accomplished and well-realised it was also listed of architectural interest.
