More than 250 people sign up to scheme aimed at combating Malvern's litter louts

MORE THAN 250 residents and businesses have now joined Malvern Hills District Council’s campaign against litter louts.

The authority’s Adopt a Street volunteer litter picking scheme has been running for nine months and now has 80 individuals and 20 groups of around ten people each on board.

The council now wants more people to sign up ahead of The Great British September Clean which takes place from September 11 to 27.

Participants are urged to share their efforts and tag the council in their litter-picking photos on social media.

The national event, run by Keep Britain Tidy, replaces the usual Great British Spring Clean, which was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Adopt a Street scheme encourages residents, community groups, businesses, and other organisations to choose a section of street or public land and then pledge to litter pick it on a regular basis.

In return, people are given their own dedicated litter picking kit to use and will receive regular updates on the scheme as well as the council’s anti-litter campaign.

There will also be opportunities to take part in community litter picks during the year.

Coun John Raine, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “It is wonderful to see such a positive response to the Adopt a Street scheme.

“Our aim is to work together with our volunteer litter pickers to help make our district a cleaner and tidier place to live.

“We are encouraging more people to get involved ahead of the Great British September Clean and set a positive example of good citizenship and care for our environment. Hopefully clean streets will act as a deterrent against further littering.”

Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the risk of spreading the virus, MHDC will not be loaning out litter picking kit to community groups as they have done in previous years.

People are instead encouraged to sign up for the Adopt a Street scheme.
