New council award scheme to honour eco-friendly projects in Malvern

Malvern Editorial 26th Jan, 2024   0

A NEW award scheme is being launched  to recognise eco-friendly and biodiversity projects in Malvern.

The Malvern Hills Greener Places Award has been implemented by Malvern Hills District Council to honour and promote schemes going above and beyond to create sustainable places in the region.

Projects could include built development from individual buildings to whole developments, or include beneficial land management and biodiversity enhancements, as well as supporting infrastructure such as renewable energy or transport.

Anything contributing towards Malvern district being a more sustainable and climate resilient place may be eligible.

However, projects that raise the bar on the following issues would be particularly welcomed:

  • Energy efficiency and reducing space heating demand
  • Utilising low carbon heating systems
  • Installing renewable energy technologies
  • Improving biodiversity and habitats
  • Adapting to the impacts of climate change
  • Active and low carbon travel

Applications can be submitted at any time and projects will be considered throughout the year.

They can be submitted by people/organisations directly involved in the project or they may be nominated by someone externally, the council may also identify projects for consideration for an award.

Councillor John Raine, portfolio holder for environmental services at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We are encouraging applications for buildings, developments and land that make a positive environmental impact to the Malvern Hills district.

“The scheme meets several of our council priorities around reducing carbon emissions, renewable energy, and improving the quality of the built and natural environment”.

Awards will be granted on individual merit and the final decision will be made by the Malvern Hills District Council’s Environment Policy Development Panel.

Coun Mark Driscoll, chair of the environmental panel at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “The aim of the awards is to provide case study examples of what is possible to achieve across our district and encourage others to do the same.

“Whether it is the introduction of a wildflower meadow or installing energy saving measures, please send in an application today”.

The Malvern Hills Greener Places Award was approved by the Executive Committee on 23 January 2023.
