New Dyson Perrins ward councillor enthusiastic for community role

THE NEW councillor for the Dyson Perrins ward says he will bring a breath of fresh air and enthusiasm to Malvern Town Council.

Matthew Fletcher was co-opted in by the council a fortnight ago following an extraordinary general meeting and is already raring to go in his bid to give something back to the community.

The 34-year-old, who owns Malvern Lounge on Abbey Road and has lived in the ward for the majority of his life, told the Observer he did not join the council just to have the word councillor before his name.

And that he aims to provide something in the community for those aged between 25 and 46.

He said: “I want to be able to give something back to my generation, I’m not here just four the four letters [Coun] before my name.

“There’s a lot going on in the community for families and children but in terms of the middle group, there is not a lot on for them.

“I was delighted to have been co-oped in by the town council and I believe I can bring some fresh air, enthusiasm, passion, compassion and energy to them.

“I deal with the public and tourists everyday and got my finger on the pulse of what is going on in Malvern.”

One of the issues Coun Fletcher aims to combat is reducing the amount of cars parked on residential streets in town.

This came after emergency services struggled to get through Belmont Road to deal with a fatal house fire earlier this month.

Coun Fletcher added: “Parking has got to be looked on very seriously as there’s not a huge amount of spaces available in Malvern as it is.

“It is a stumbling block but it has to be addressed as fire engines could not get through the parked traffic on Belmont Road to get to the fatality.

“We are going to use a fire engine and do a test to show that if there was an emergency, there is real trouble for the services to get through.”
