No fooling you with our big 'Hex-clusive'

AS MOST of you know already, our big ‘Hex-clusive’ about the new Covid regulation coming into force for the Easter weekend (story below) was an April Fools Day prank (although some people did say there had been worse ideas put forward).

Thanks for reading and sharing the piece, have a good Easter weekend (you can still map out hexagons in your outdoor areas if you want to be on the safe side) – we’ll try and catch you out again this time next year.

Rule of Hex – New Covid regulation coming into force for Easter weekend

A NEW ‘Rule of Hex’ has been unveiled today to ensure people socially distance at the many outdoor events expected to take place over this Easter bank holiday weekend.

According to the new guidelines, anyone hosting a garden party, barbecue or other get-together is being told to map out a 2m sided hexagon in their garden or yard. Guests being strategically positioned (either standing or sitting) on each of the ‘points’ will ensure everyone stays ample room apart.

Hex Inspectors will be sent out to randomly chosen areas across England (the Rule of Hex does not apply in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) during the four-day break to measure the shapes and ensure Covid rules are being adhered to.

Shapes can be created with string and tent pegs, chalk (for patios and yard floors) or even by using a temporary paint spray similar to the one used by football referees.

Anyone caught with hexagons too short, wonky-drawn shapes or none mapped out at all could face a verbal warning or even incur a fine.

One official Ralf Poloi told the Observer: “With the latest easing of restrictions happening on Monday, this is shaping up to be a memorable Easter weekend and we want people to have fun and enjoy themselves – but it needs to be done safely.

“Those planning to have less than six guests can use triangles, squares or even pentagons, as long as the sides are 2m long.

“What we don’t want to see are any heptagons, octagons or – God forbid – undecagons!”

If this weekend’s Rule of Hex pilot proves successful, it could become a useful tool and be rolled out to pub beer gardens and outdoor dining areas when they reopen on April 12.

More information on the scheme will be revealed at midday today.
