PICTURE SPECIAL - Crowds turn out to welcome Queen's Baton Relay to Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn

CROWDS turned out in Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay.

The baton arrived in Worcestershire en route to the Second City, ready for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to start on Thursday, July 28.

This afternoon in Malvern and Upton, there was a real carnival atmosphere with everyone joining in with the fun before the much-anticipated and long-awaited competition gets under way.

Among the places visited were the Waterside in Upton-upon-Severn where there was live music and the baton was carried by the Severn Area Rescue Association. The relay continued through the town to Old Street.

The baton also visited Malvern Town Football Club, the Worcestershire Beacon, Great Malvern and Church Street which was hosting its own street games – organised by Freedom Leisure.


Also there was more live music and other performances.

Coun Daniel Walton, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Tourism at Malvern Hills District Council, said the towns were excited to see communities come together to celebrate the arrival and showcase the beautiful district.

Prior to today he had urged people to turn out in their droves and they did not disappoint with the crowds several people deep along the baton’s route.

Green Party Councillor Natalie McVey said on Twitter: “It was a brilliant experience.

“Well done to everyone involved.”

After Malvern and Upton the baton headed towards Worcester on its journey.
