Rare butterfly continues to flutter in Malvern

ONE OF the county’s rarest butterflies continues to flutter in Malvern despite a decline in numbers nationally.

Early summer records show the grayling butterfly, which is seeing its population fall rapidly across the country, continue to have a strong population on the Malvern Hills.

Work from the Malvern Hills Conservators and its volunteers have enabled the highly camouflaged insect to remain in ‘stable numbers’ in the town.

Nicky Quinn, Conservators warden, said: “We are so lucky to have such a good population of grayling butterflies here but they need constant monitoring so we can see how they respond to our management.

“One of the best places to see the grayling is up the hill from Ivy Scar Rock as you walk onto North Hill from North Quarry car park.

“You will need a good eye as they can be difficult to see when they are perched on the rocks.”
