Swing Time Jazz Session with Len Thwaites heading for the Malvern Cube

A SWING Time Jazz Session with Len Thwaites is heading to Malvern next Sunday, July 3.

The show at The Cube is the next in the Malvern Jazz, Blues and Swing Club event.

Len is a long standing stalwart of the UK jazz scene and over the years he has featured in the bands of Bob Wallis, Alex Welsh, Monty Sunshine and many others.

For many years, Len ran the very popular Hereford Jazz club at the Booth Hall Hotel, which featured top UK musicians and visiting stars from the USA such as Billy Butterfield, Ralph Sutton and Jake Hanna.

A career highlight was being asked by the Bulmer family to put together a band for a gala party in honour of the visiting American president Bill Clinton.

During the evening, Mr Clinton took to the stage with his saxophone and enjoyed a brief cameo performance with the band.

Club treasurer Neil Thwaites said: “This is a welcome return to our roots, when Len is let loose with just a telephone and his renowned ‘little black book’ of all the musicians he’s worked with over the years.

“Whilst the club often books established bands with regular line-ups, these sessions are hugely popular as musicians enjoy coming together on the night to conjure up the magic of live music.”

The band line-up features George Huxley – reeds, Tony Pipkin – trumpet, Derek Harrison – piano and vocals, Len Thwaites – double bass and Ken Wright – drums.

Doors open next Sunday at 7pm with the band (including interval) will play from 8pm to 10.30pm.

Admission is £10 cash on the door.
