THESE pictures taken by town photographer Tarquin Shaw-Young show the moment the beacon was lit on the Malvern Hills to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

It was lit – along with more than 2,022 throughout the UK and the Commonwealth – on the Worcestershire Beacon by Vice Lord-Lieutenant Roger Brunt CBE.

A local bugler performed a piece entitled ‘Majesty’ written specially for the occasion before the lighting.

A beacon chain was used as a communication tool in the past but has become a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

Similar services have become a tradition for royal jubilees, weddings and coronations.

The event was supported by Worcestershire County Council, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Hills Trust.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant Roger Brunt CBE said he was delighted to carry out the lighting on the Worcestershire Beacon – a fitting location to mark the momentous occasion.
