THE REGION’S first mental health sensory room has been installed in Worcester’s Hadley Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
Patients recovering from treatment will be able to benefit from the state-of-the-art room.
The announcement was made this week by the Worcestershire Health and Care Trust and coincides with today’s World Mental Health Day.
Sensory rooms are specially designed environments which provide a calming, immersive and interactive space, away from every day distractions.
They are increasingly being used within mental health settings, providing a non-clinical and therapeutic environment to help decrease a patients stress, anger or anxiety.
The Hadley Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit supports patients with a serious mental health disorder where there is a significant risk of aggression or harm.
Led by a multi-disciplinary team, there is a focus on collaborative care and recovery planning between patients and staff, to support timely discharge.
Michelle Greatorex, Director of Nursing and Quality for Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust: “It is fantastic to be able to open the first mental health sensory room in the region.
“The team have worked tirelessly to get the room ready for patients. It’s a real asset to the Trust and will benefit patient care immensely.”
Dr Tara Walker – Staff Grade Doctor, Mandy Anderson – Ward Manager and Helen Allen – Occupational Therapist, say they are proud of the work that has been achieved.
Dr Tara Walker adde: “Our aim is that the implementation of the sensory room enhances patient experience by reducing the use of increased medications whilst providing empowerment to build resilience and coping mechanisms that can be incorporated into everyday life.”
The new sensory, funded by charitable donations, will benefit patients from across Worcestershire and surrounding counties.
