Hooper frustrated as Malvern Town suffer first league defeat

MALVERN Town joint-boss Lee Hooper believes the Hillsiders suffered an FA Cup hangover as they slumped to their first West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division defeat of the season at the weekend.

After coming from 2-0 down to beat Boldmere St Michaels 3-2 in the FA Cup extra preliminary round last Tuesday night, Hooper’s side were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Herefordshire side Wellington on their return to league action on Saturday.

Neil Warmsley had put Wellington ahead after 27 minutes with Adam Newbury adding the second from the penalty spot with 20 minutes remaining after Paul Jones had been brought down in the area.

The Hillsiders were then reduced to ten men in second half stoppage time when Louis Loader was given his marching orders for a robust challenge.

Hooper said: “It was just one of those days.

“I don’t know whether it was a hangover from the FA Cup but after the highs of last Tuesday we were just not at it or focused as a group.

“The players know it was not good enough.

“We were second best all over the pitch and they fell well below the standards we expect.”

Malvern will hope to get back to the required standards this Saturday when they welcome Racing Club Warwick to the HDAnywhere Community Stadium for the preliminary round of the FA Cup.

“It’s a case of drawing a line under the defeat now and moving on to the next one,” added Hooper.

“We’ll work hard on the training ground this week in order to prove this was just a blip and ensure we are ready to respond in the right way this weekend.”
