MALVERN Town boss Les Jones has challenged his high-scoring side to continue their winning form right through to Christmas after netting SEVEN goals over the weekend.
The Hillsiders kept up their hopes of promotion in the West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division after thrashing Wellington Amateurs 7-2 on Saturday – their biggest win of the season in terms of goals scored.
Four goals from top scorer Dave Reynolds were added to by Lewis Platt, Bryan Craven and Nathan Hughes in a dominant display which saw Malvern at their attacking best.
The win, which followed a 4-2 win over Dudley Sports in the Worcestershire Senior Urn, lifted Malvern into fourth place in the table, eleven points behind leaders Haughmond with two games in hand.
Malvern Town also won 6-0 last week against bottom-of-the-table Gornal Athletic meaning they have scored an incredible 13 goals in two league games. Including the cup win midweek it is 17 goals in three games.
And Jones was thrilled with Malvern’s ruthlessness in front of goal.
“To beat Wellington Amateurs who are a young and dangerous team 7-2 is a great result for us,” he told the Observer.
“It was 2-2 at half time and we needed to step up in the second half and to be fair we absolutely blitzed them.
“Followed by our cup win midweek at Dudley Sports and last week’s win at home to Gornal Athletic – it’s been a very good week for us and we’re now looking forward to the next game.
“We’ve got a tough run in until Christmas and looking to keep the winning run going. There are no easy games in this league but if we’re looking at finishing in the top three once again then we have to go out and get results.”
However Jones said it was a ‘big blow’ to lose skipper Reece King for the next eight weeks and called for his side to battle together.
The central midfielder broke his leg during Malvern’s Worcestershire Senior Urn win over Dudley Sports.
Test have shown King broke his fibula bone and is likely to miss the remainder of 2016 and possibly big games against title rivals Haughmond (December and second place Wolverhampton Sporting Community (December 31).
Jones added: “It’s a big disappointment for the team and for the lad but the good thing he’s a quick healer and I’m sure he’ll be back as soon as possible.”
Malvern travel to Bilston Town Community on Saturday.
