Kempsey eyeing sixth promotion in eight seasons - but it won't be easy vows club chairman

THE AIM for Kempsey this year is to gain a remarkable sixth promotion in eight seasons.

But club chairman and off-spin bowler Steve Winstanley knows all to well the challenges which lie ahead in Worcestershire County League Division Two.

Kempsey narrowly missed out on the Division Three title last season to Himbleton, but their second place finish continued their remarkable rise from Division Seven.

Not bad for a team which started Saturday cricket just ten years ago.

Winstanley admitted there was no hiding the fact Kempsey had some ‘top stars’ among their ranks but stressed it was their togetherness that got them through the leagues.

“It’s incredible what we have achieved because everyone here was part of the Nunnery Wood High School team which was very successful,” he said.

“Due to frustrations of not getting into first teams at big clubs after we left school we all decided to join Kempsey.

“There is a massive family feel around the club and it is known as ‘The Mission’.

“I don’t know exactly what that is but we band together, the group is tight and that’s what has got us this far.”

Kempsey begin life in Division Two tomorrow (Saturday) when they entertain Droitwich Spa.

Spa got relegated from Division One last season and Winstanley is expecting them to be gunning for an immediate return to the WCL’s top flight at the first attempt.

“It’s going to be exciting to play Droitwich as they are a big and well-established club – like many sides in this division,” he said.

“We are well aware their resources are greater than ours but we are used to that.

“The first half of the season is going to be the toughest as we have some unavailabilities but if we can get a few wins under our belts early on it will give us a boost for the second half.

“Our aim is to try and win the league but we know there are some big teams in this division so it won’t be easy.”
