Malvern power past fellow strugglers

A SCINTILLATING first half showing at Spring Lane on Saturday saw Malvern defeat fellow Midlands One West strugglers Old Laurentians 39-29.

The home supporters watched on with delight as their side burst out of the blocks and wrapped up the bonus point by the half hour mark.

Lock Dave Smith opened the scoring with a seventh minute try before Ryan Watkins, Nathan Dunford and Richard Preece crossed the whitewash to give Malvern a 22-0 lead.

Despite the early onslaught, OLs also looked sharp with ball in hand and they soon got off the mark when centre Iain Wallis touched down.

Joe Shore added another try just before the interval but it came six minutes after Malvern scored their fifth of the afternoon, with James Hynes powering over.

The hosts then put further breathing space between themselves and OLs with two tries at the start of the second period.

Preece finished off a well-worked move before Richard Fleming joined the party of scorers to move the Worcestershire outfit 39-10 in front.

However, the one-side scoreline failed to dash OLs’ spirit as they produced a stirring fightback in the final 20 minutes. Aaron Metcalfe went over before Troy Owen struck twice, but it was too little too late as Malvern clung on to claim a victory which steers them five points clear of the relegation area.
