Malvern Town take summer influx to five

MALVERN Town boss Les Jones expressed his delight after capturing defender Jake Willcox from Bromsgrove Sporting and left-sided winger Dale Goddard from Worcester Raiders.

Twenty-five-year-old Willcox made 15 appearances for the Rouslers last season, helping them become ‘Invincible’ Midland League Division One champions, while Goddard was an influential figure in Raiders’ Worcestershire FA Saturday Junior Cup success last season.

Willcox and Goddard become Jones’ fourth and fifth summer signings, following in the footsteps of strikers Kyonn Evans (Littleton) and Ben Evans (Walsall Wood) and defender Jay Sauntson (Westfields).

“Jake is a composed player and has quality on the ball as well as a burst of pace,” said Jones.

“He is also a great athlete and will be a superb character in the dressing room.

“Dale is a versatile left-sided player who we needed to bring in especially after losing our two left-footers Dave Reynolds and Lewis Platt to higher level opposition.

“Having Dale will balance the squad and is a good acquisition for us.”

Meanwhile, Malvern will kick-off the 2017/18 season with an FA Cup extra preliminary round tie at fellow West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division outfit Wolverhampton Casuals on Saturday, August 5.

The winners will then entertain Midland League Premier Division sides Coventry Sphinx or Boldmere St Michaels in the preliminary round on Saturday, August 19.

Jones’ side will also host Smethwick in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase which takes place on Saturday, September 9.

The winners will face either West Midlands Premier Bewdley Town or Rugby Town of the MFL Premier Division in the second qualifying round on Saturday, September 23.

“We have been given a really tough FA Cup but that is expected considering we are from one of the lowest leagues to take part in the competition,” Jones said.

“However, we will are looking forward to it and hopefully the fans will come out in force to cheer us on.

“Like Casuals, Smethwick are also in our league so we have got quite lucky in terms of the draw for both the FA Cup and FA Vase.

“I’m delighted to have the Vase game at home and I can’t wait for the season to get started now.”
